What legal barriers and potential problems are there in a Briton buying a property in Hungary?
Q. I'm a Briton who owns a property in the UK and am thinking about buying a 50k property in Budapest, Hungary. What legal barriers are there, how easy is it to sell the property further down the line, and what potential problems am I letting myself in for, given that I shall carry on living in the UK and will let out the Hungarian property? How can I make letting-at-a-distance less risky?

A. I do this quite often. This year I actually got my citizenship since I've been working in Hungary for the last 7 years and coming back to the states. Where is this property? If it's in Budapest, Szeged, Eger, Sopron or any other city you shouldn't have a problem. I have 4 properties in budapest 1 in Szeged in 2 in Eger. Haven't had any problems. Have also sold 2properties in the last 2 years while I wasn't a citizen. If you are going to get someone to help you lease it either find a woman or find a brit or american that lives in the area that can help. Make sure you always get credit card numbers and never rent to a hungarian or gypsy. I rented my first apartment to a young female student and got screwed over. Right now is a teriffic time… [cont.]

Anyone heard whats happened to the pregnant Briton on trial in Laos?
Q. Her trial hearing was supposed to be last week and there is no news at all of what happened in her trial. Was she found guilty or not? It was mentioned a couple of weeks ago that if she was found guilty, she was to come back to Briton to serve her remaining time here. What are your views on this matter?
Asked by Polly - Mon May 18 04:00:32 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Haven't heard anything lately about this. If you commit a crime in a particular country then you should serve your time there. If the regime is harsh ,tough. In this particular case if she is found guilty and the death penalty is the usual punishment then that is what she must face. They can wait until the baby is born before the sentence is carried out. Why should she be allowed to serve time in our prisons at our expense. She like everybody else knows drug smuggling is a crime with harsh penalties ,some countries harsher than others. She got caught, that was a risk she took.

What is the full story of the Briton who was executed in China?
Q. What's the full story? Is it true that he was duped into it by a Chinese gang? Surely these people ought to have been killed instead? Why haven't any of our government officials gone of to protest with the government? More importantly, would the opposition have done any different if they had been in government?

A. Essentially he was caught with a couple of Kilos of Heroin. In China this is punishable by death. The defence in his trial pointed out that he was suffering a number of mental issues and that he believed he was in China to promote a pop record deal. The Chinese court were not satisfied, especially as he has never actually been formally diagnosed with any of the conditions he was supposed to be suffering from. As a result he was convicted as a competent and fully sane individual and sentenced to death. He was executed in the early hours of this morning. Nobody is quite sure at the moment but they believe it was by lethal injection. He going to be buried or cremated (not sure which) within 24 hours. The Chinese have said they will not allow… [cont.]

Q. Not sure of how to go about it? I know that many Brits are sick and tired with the cost of living, I feel that we are being totally ripped off, the cost of our water rates an council tax is absolutly ridiculous. In New zealand you do not have to pay for water. We should not be charged for somthing that is a nessecity for life. We really all need to get in on this I know i'm not alone on this one.

Q. I recently found some of his work online and immediately fell in love with it. Specifically, his paintings "Una and the Lion" and "Fidelity". I've tried to find books on him, or a mere biography, and haven't found anything. I'd love to have a collection of his work, but haven't found a single book out him at my local library, or at Amazon. A. I don't know about the insane, but Australia did start out as a British penal colony, so it is true that the British did send people it considered criminals to Australia. Starting around 1788, a penal colony was formed around where the city of Sydney is today. The British sent over 160,000 people convicted of various crimes (from petty theft to murder) to Australia over a period of 80 years. This was an alternative to death penalty, which the British were using for so many years for over 200 different crimes, known as the Bloody Code. In the 1850's however, when gold was found in Australia, it started a gold rush and the next twenty years saw normal immigration and a boost to 1.7 million people. We are already beginning to see the results in ways that we didn't expect even a couple of years ago. Real estate prices have plunged, businesses are laying people off, consumers have significantly reduced spending, retirement, investment and stock accounts have become worthless and credit is scarce while wages remain stagnant. Should the Briton caught smuggling 250,000 of Heroin have his sentence commuted?

So claiming bipolar as a defence for smuggling heroin is ridiculous. How much misery and how many crimes are committed by the stupid idiots who are addicted to the heroin he tried to bring in. Money and greed were the reasons for the smuggling. No sympathy from me.

A. British is an adjective to describe people and things originating in the British Isles. Briton is a proper noun to describe one of the indigenous people of Great Britain. Britisher is a term which originated in the First World War to describe a subject or inhabitant of Great Britain, esp. one in the British military or naval service. Unlike the first two, it is not (and never was) used formally.

A. IHT is payable by the executors of the estate where the deceased was resident in the UK. If this does not apply, then IHT will not be due.
