Also from the Greek word "anatome"--ana: apart, tome: to cut-->To cut apart.) is a branch of biology and medicine that is the consideration of the structure of living things. It is a general term that includes human anatomy, animal anatomy (zootomy) and plant anatomy (phytotomy). In some of its facets anatomy is closely related to embryology, comparative anatomy and comparative embryology, through common roots in evolution. Anatomy is subdivided into gross anatomy (or macroscopic anatomy) and microscopic anatomy. Gross anatomy (also called topographical anatomy, regional anatomy, or anthropotomy) is the study of anatomical structures that can be seen by unaided vision with the naked eye. Microscopic anatomy is the study of minute anatomical structures assisted with microscopes, which includes histology (the study of the organization of tissues), and cytology (the study of cells). The history of anatomy has been characterized, over time, by a continually developing understanding of the functions of organs and structures in the body. Methods have also improved dramatically, advancing from examination of animals through dissection of cadavers (dead human bodies) to technologically complex techniques developed in the 20th century including X-ray, ultrasound, and MRI imaging. Anatomy should not be confused with anatomical pathology (also called morbid anatomy or histopathology), which is the study of the gross and microscopic appearances of diseased organs. GNU Free Documentation License What is the course of training to teach anatomy and physiology? Q. I was in nursing training about thirty years ago. I dropped out to get married. I loved anatomy and physiology and wonder what I have to do to teach it? Whether do this than nursing. Asked by bishopnzgc - Mon Oct 26 21:07:01 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most people aren't hired to teach one course - you'd apply to faculty positions in nursing or biology and teach other courses as well. You'd need a PhD in biology to teach at the 4-year college or university level (masters for 2-year college); nursing often depends on what they're looking for. Here's a site that lists current job openings at college and what they're looking for in candidates. Answered by eri - Mon Oct 26 21:11:48 2009 Is it important to take anatomy and phisyiology in high school if i want to go to med school? Q. I am a junior, and I have the possibility of taking ap physics and ap bio next year, i think that if I take anatomy it will be too much work; i want to go to med school, and Im not sure if I should focus in physics and bio senior year, and take anatomy in college or viceversa. Asked by Alex - Sat Oct 31 18:54:33 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is not important to take Anatomy and Physiology in high school if you plan to go to med school. You need a strong science background, but A&P at the college level is not even a requirement of most (if not all) med school programs. A&P at the college level is generally more for the nursing track, though it won't hurt. Med schools want to see (at minimum) two years of bio, a year of chem, a year of physics and a year of organic chem. They will teach you all the anatomy you need. Now, you do need to take more science than the minimum, and a semester or two of A&P will be helpful, but it sounds like you are taking plenty of science now while in high school, don't worry about A&P right now.
